Why is Change the most consistent thing?
Why is Change one of the most consistent things leaders face?
Leadership requires change. Experienced leaders are used to making decisions and adapting to changes.
Sometimes the goal changes.
Leaders are fully committed to pursuing the goal and sometimes find out that the entire plan has changed.
Managers follow upper management, and sometimes they decide to go in a different direction. Change can be challenging when you do not understand why it mainly happens to leaders in middle management roles within a company.
Changes can be challenging when you don’t agree with the change or understand the new vision.
The best thing a leader can do in this situation is to try to communicate and better understand what is going on. There is a good chance that it is happening for an excellent reason that will benefit everyone involved.
Sometimes as a leader, you realize the goal has to change, and you make the decision.
In this case, you are making a big decision and must have good reasons for making the change. If you are leading others, you need to get them together, cast a new vision, and get everyone on board. Changing the goal midstream is a big deal, so make sure it is necessary and reasonable.
Sometimes your teammates change.
People leave jobs, teams, and groups for a variety of reasons. If they decide to go, lead the rest of the team through the change. Bring someone on board to replace that person if necessary, or adjust the existing team and keep moving forward. Change happens, and leaders deal with it.
Sometimes attitudes change.
As a leader, it is your job to model a great attitude for others to follow. Attitude adjustments are sometimes necessary, and you must deal with them. A bad mood can infect the whole team, so it must be dealt with quickly and effectively. Attitude is an art and something you need to teach effectively. Always make sure your attitude is worth catching. Leaders need to be serious about presenting a great attitude for others to see.
Sometimes the funding changes.
As a leader, you must watch the budget. Overspending can derail a project and cause significant problems. Make sure you track spending and that the funding is coming in to support the project. Money is a big deal, so make sure you pay attention and make changes as needed.
Sometimes change is inspired.
Leaders are sometimes inspired to make the goal bigger and better. Leadership should pursue incremental progress. Do better than the goal, and you will become a great leader. Allow others to inspire change within you. Look at changes as an opportunity to grow and learn something.
Sometimes changes are forced by dire circumstances.
Even when things are right, bad stuff can still happen. Unforeseen events can cause a need for change. When that happens, evaluate the situation with your team or someone you trust and look at options carefully. Sleep on big decisions but don’t be afraid to make changes if necessary. Leaders have to deal with bad news and work through it.
Sometimes change is a cop-out.
Sometimes we need to stay the course and make no changes at all. Changes can represent an excuse to quit or give up. Sometimes we need to decide to keep everything in place and move forward! When changes happen, make sure they are necessary and helpful. Keep the goal in mind and evaluate all potential changes.
Once you add something to the recipe, you can’t take it out. Don’t add things that you will regret later. Be careful and think things through before you do anything new.
