10 ideas for personal growth
1. Read 20-30 minutes every day. Leaders are readers and always learn from books, articles, and quotes. I have found myself remembering things I read a few years back that were insightful and valuable to me today.
2. Counsel with Mentors. Find people who specialize in what you need to learn and buy them coffee. Seek their counsel and listen to their advice. There is nothing better than having a coach help you win.
3. Exercise. A healthy body is essential regardless of who you are or what you do. A healthy body allows you to do things. Walking is so great, and if you listen to a podcast while walking, you can learn simultaneously. As I get older, I realize that I need to use it, or I may lose it.
4. Pray. If you are a person of faith, ask God for guidance in your life. Talk to Him and lay your cares at His feet. God answers prayer.
5. Work Hard. Put in a full day’s work and work hard. We get better with practice and by doing the work. A sense of accomplishment is great, so be the hardest worker in the room and lead by your example.
6. Thinking for a Change. A book by John Maxwell, and I love the double meaning. Thinking for a change is key to growth and positive results. Take time to think, reflect and plan your future.
7. Learn from history. Take time to reflect on historical events and learn the lessons.
8. Do things differently. Take a different approach and try new things. Expand your efforts by learning different ways to get stuff done. Be willing to pivot when necessary and try other methods until you get it right.
9. Ask why. Collect the facts and results and ask why those results are good or bad. To understand the “what,” analyze the “why.” Especially if you want to repeat or avoid the what, quality questions produce better answers.
10. Enjoy the journey. Stay positive and learn from success and setbacks. Have an attitude of gratitude and be thankful in all circumstances.
There are many more things we can do to grow; these are just the 10 I brainstormed and captured on a list. Life is a series of lessons learned, and personal growth is one of the primary keys to success.
